The Healing Eyes of Mercy. A Journey Towards the Light of God’s Love.

Chapter Six: Drawn to the Shadows.

Genesis 4:7. If you do well, you can hold up your head; but if not, sin is a demon lurking at the door: his urge is toward you, but you can be his master.

Book Excerpt. Enraptured with her prince charming and focused on the promises he offered, the young teen failed to recognize the growing darkness forming around her. She easily discarded her earlier life lessons about “honoring her father and mother” for what she saw as her “greater good”. Not once had she stopped to consider the darkness of her actions, for she was simply doing what was necessary to get to the next thrilling event in her life. The rush and excitement of these pre-storm conditions were simply much too exciting for her to avoid, for darkness can be deceivingly similar and attractive as the light of God. It too requires free will, it too requires active participation, and it too provides its own set of gifts: pleasure, abandonment, escape and fantasy. Failing to recognize its impact, darkness began to take its toll, for darkness always requires a continued payment of sorts. Unfortunately, the young girl had turned away from her original love and Savior. She had forgotten about the healing Eyes of Mercy and failed to recognize the dark clouds forming around her. Unknowingly she was headed straight into a destructive storm of darkness and despair!

Capernaum was a fishing village located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, the headquarters of Christ’s three year public ministry, and the site of over 1/3 of His 33 recorded miracles, including the healing of a man who was possessed by an unclean spirit (Luke 4:33-36) and the servant of a Roman centurion who asked for help (Luke 7:1-10). Archeological excavations have revealed the remains of an ancient synagogue and house, believed to be St. Peter’s home and the site of his mother-in-law’s miraculous healing from a high fever (Luke 4:38-39). Today, the altar of a Byzantine Church, sitting atop this ancient home, marks the miracle’s proposed location.

Jesus not only performed miracles in Capernaum, but also taught the Jewish inhabitants about the coming of His Kingdom. Even amidst the glory of Christ’s real presence, many still found it difficult to believe in His message of salvation. Subsequently, we find Jesus formally cursing the city for their lack of faith in Him as the promised Messiah.

“As for you, Capernaum, are you to be exalted to the skies? You shall go down to the realm of death! If the miracles worked in you had taken place in Sodom, it would be standing today. I assure you, it will go easier for Sodom than for you on the day of judgment” (Matthew 11:23-24).

These comments simply foreshadow Christ’s later remarks, “When much has been given a man, much will be required of him” (Luke 13:48). Therefore, let us always strive to acknowledge His presence in our midst and in Him our opportunity for salvation!

Closing 3:00 p.m. prayer for Divine Mercy.

Eternal Father, I offer You, the Body and Blood, soul and divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and the sins of the entire world.

For the sake of His Sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the entire world. (Repeat two more times).

Jesus, I trust in You.
