Chapter Five: Too Busy for the Light.

Luke 10:38-42. On their journey, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him to her home. She had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and listened to his words. Martha, who was busy with all the details of hospitality, came to him and said, “Lord are you not concerned that my sister has left me to do the household tasks all alone? Tell her to help me.” The Lord in reply said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and upset about many things, one thing only is required. Mary has chosen the better portion and she shall not be deprived of it.”

High School was more than the girl could have ever imagined. Her eyes gazed upon a world she did not even know existed; a world filled with the familiar faith, friends, sports and schoolwork, and the unfamiliar parties, alcohol and boys. Busy trying to figure out who she was, in the midst of all these demands and distractions, the teen-age girl found herself focusing more on her accomplishments and life experiences and less on the Healing Eyes of Mercy. Taking God’s warmth and love for granted, she assumed that His protection would remain, despite her neglect and avoidance, for He is kind, He is patient and His love is eternal. Although these thoughts had merit, what the young teenager failed to recognize was that the Eyes of Mercy, being love itself, longed for a faithful and freely given relationship with her. His Mercy, a gift never forced, was one that must be freely accepted and chosen. Although His gaze would always be upon her, He would allow her the free will to make independent choices and the free will to experience their consequences, alone or with His help, for this choice was hers to make. He would simply remain steadfast, patient and await her return!

Virtual Pilgrimage Site: Caesarea Philippi.

Situated 25 miles north of the Sea of Galilee, at the base of Mt. Hermann, Caesarea Philippi is the location of one of the largest springs feeding the Jordan River. This abundant water supply made the area very fertile and attractive for religious worship in earlier centuries. Numerous temples, to pagan gods, were built here by the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. This ancient site, also known as Panias, got its name from the Greek god Pan, commemorated and worshiped at the mountain’s top. Here, in a large cave, was the fresh water spring origin, a center for pagan worship at the time of Christ. At this site, human and animal sacrifices were cast into the cave as an offering to the god Pan. Pan, thought to be half-man and half-goat, was the god of fright or panic. He is often depicted playing the flute. It was here, amidst all this fear, idolatry, distraction and temptation, that Jesus gathered His twelve apostles and asked, “Who do you say that I am.” Focused on their responses, He heard Peter proclaim, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” Upon hearing this remark, Jesus replied, “Blest are you Simon son of Jonah! No mere man has revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. I for my part declare to you, you are ‘Rock’, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the jaws of death shall not prevail against it.” Here, at the site of such distraction and temptation, Jesus restored unity to a fallen world and provided a pathway back, towards the Light of God’s Love.

Closing 3:00 p.m. prayer for Divine Mercy.

Eternal Father, I offer You, the Body and Blood, soul and divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and the sins of the entire world.

For the sake of His Sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the entire world.            (repeat two more times).

Jesus, I trust in You.
