A Night in Haiti.

haiti parish

Mary, Queen of Peace parishioners at St. Benoit Parish in Dessources, Haiti.

This Saturday night (March 18), from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., I will be attending the Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church’s 5th Annual Night in Haiti to celebrate the Haitian culture and thank the community for their continued support of St. Benoit, our sister parish since 2011. My non-for-profit company, The Healing Eyes of Mercy, will also be there selling religious items and sacred devotionals in honor of our sister parish’s great patron, St. Benedict. Music, fellowship, Haitian food and the opportunity to buy hand made Haitian crafts will add to the overall experience of the night. All proceeds from the event will help pay the education and school lunch expenses for the entire school at St. Benoit (elementary through high school).

Haiti is a country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea. It occupies the western three-eighths of the island, which it shares with the country of Dominican Republic. It is the most populated country in the Caribbean, containing over 10.6 million people on its 10,714 square miles of land. Haiti was originally inhabited by the indigenous Taino people and later discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Both Spain and France occupied this region until January 1, 1804, when the sovereign nation of Haiti was established. Haiti’s successful revolution made it the first independent nation in both Latin America and the Caribbean.

On January 12, 2010, Haiti was struck by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake which left between 46,000 to 85,000 people dead and 1.6 million homeless. It was at this time, that Mary, Queen of Peace formed a life long relationship with St. Benoit Parish in Haiti. To this day, we remain steadfast and active partners, dedicated to helping our sister parish to “get back on its feet” amidst the difficulties found in the wake of the 2010 earthquake and several subsequent natural disasters. Ongoing efforts include but are not limited to improving St. Benoit’s school and church facilities, educational opportunities, fresh water and healthy meal availability, nearby health care access, and income generation possibilities. Much progress has been made, however much remains.

If you would like to help the people of St. Benoit, and are unable to attend this year’s MQP Haiti Night, please click on the following link ( to make a donation, or purchase a religious item in their honor. All website proceeds and/or Haitian donations will be given directly to the Mary, Queen of Peace Haiti Ministry for the benefit of St. Benoit. I assure you, what you give in the way of financial support will be returned in double. The people of St. Benoit always express their sincere gratitude, through the quiet words of prayer, on behalf of their patrons located throughout the U.S. Thank you for your support. As they say in Haiti, “saw pa konnen pl gran pase w” or “What you don’t know is greater than you.”
